Acid Reflux / Ulcer: Operation

Overview | Pre-Operation | Operation | Post-Operation | Back at Home

Once you have removed any false teeth or plates, your throat will be sprayed with some local anaesthetic and you will be asked to swallow it. This can taste unpleasant. You will be asked to lie down in a comfortable position and a plastic mouthpiece will be placed in your mouth.

The sedation is given through a needle in the back of your hand and you will feel the effect within seconds. You will be given oxygen through a small tube inserted in your nose. Your oxygen levels and heart rate will be monitored using a finger peg.

A flexible telescope (endoscope) is passed into the back of your throat. You will be asked to swallow when the endoscope is in your throat. This will help me to pass easily into the oesophagus and down into your stomach and duodenum.
